Born in the USA, Leyla fell in love with Arabic dance and
music in the 1970s. She has since dedicated her time and
talent to studying, performing, and teaching Raqs Sharqi
and Egyptian style folkloric dance. She is known for her
Saidi style cane dance, her expert cymbal playing as well as
her ability to speak Arabic. In her cane dance, Egyptian
raqs sharqi and raqs balady, she brings to her audiences
\ the feeling of an evening in a Cairo night club.
Leyla teaches Egyptian folkloric dance, finger cymbals, raqs sharqi, and
essential Arabic words and phrases for dancers in classes and workshops in the
San Francisco Bay Area and northern California. She also plays finger cymbals
in an Arabic music ensemble.
Since 2006, she has taught “finger cymbals with dance” every summer at the
prestigious Ahlan Wa Sahlan Festival in Cairo, Egypt.
In 2009 she released a DVD of her Arabic words and phrases for dancers
workshop called Habibi, You Are My WHAT?! Leyla Lanty's Essential Arabic
for Dancers - Volume 1.
Early in 1999, in Cairo, Egypt, along with the fabulous singer Khalil Abboud co-
produced Golden Days Enchanting Nights a CD of new Arabic music for
dancing and listening, featuring Khalil's sensational voice and some of the best
composers and musicians to be found in Egypt.
Leyla has studied with the best dance artists, both Arab and American, in the
USA and in Cairo, Egypt, making frequent trips to Egypt to study with Raqia
Hassan and other Egyptian dance masters and to spend most of her free time
with the Egyptian people.
